Italian prof becomes master of Founders College

Professor Mauro Buccheri (right) has been appointed master of Founders College, announced Robert Tiffin, York vice-president students. Buccheri began his new duties July 1 and his term will run for five years.


A Fellow of Founders College, Buccheri, who joined York University in 1982, is a professor in the Italian Studies Program of the Department of Languages, Literatures & Linguistics in the Faculty of Arts. He has served four terms as coordinator of the Italian program and has served on departmental committees, and organized many international conferences and lecture series.


Buccheri holds a PhD from the University of Toronto in modern and contemporary Italian literature. He has published on 19th and 20th century Italian writers and is presently working on a study of myth and dialectics, titled "In the Shadow of Orpheus", which attempts to trace the history of Greek myth and its entanglement with logos or dialectical reason.


Buccheri's teaching interests and experiences are varied, ranging from Italian and European literature to Central and South American poetry, and from Italian cinema to Canadian politics of recognition.
